South Congregational Church (first) is dedicated.
January 30, 1828
Also known as the South Congregational Society, it is designed in the Greek Revival style and located near today’s 978 – 986 Washington Street. Henry Ware Jr. speaks at the ceremony. The congregation was established by members of the overcrowded Hollis Street Church on April 19, 1825 (1827-FCB). Mellish Irving Motte is the first minister. Edward Everett Hale is installed as minister on October 1, 1856 and serves until 1889 (1899-Shannon). The congregation moves to a new building (second) on Union Park Street in 1862,* merges with the Hollis Street Church and moves to Newbury Street in 1887, then merges with and moves to the First Church in Boston in 1925. The original building is redesigned and reopens as a theater in 1891.*
